As others have said, owning a home is… something else. We’ve had $50k in tree-related damage in the last 365 days. Thankfully, lots of that was covered by insurance, but a good chunk wasn’t — and a tree fell on our house, regardless!
But it does all (eventually) get fixed, and as you pointed out, the important part is that no one was hurt. Still, wishing you and your family better vibes ahead!!
Don't even get me started on trees, man. Our old oak tree took out Stephanie's van last summer, and we had to remove a maple to prevent it from doing the same to our house. Home-owning often feels like constantly putting out little fires, although much too literally in this case. But I will say that nothing makes you appreciate your home more than having to leave it for a few days. Thanks for the positive vibes. We'll get through this, but we will definitely take all the good vibes we can get right now.
Woof. Our hot water heater, well...it didn't quit working, but I had a choice of turning it off or leaving it on with plenty of towels next to it to absorb the water leaking from it (the relief valve was helpfully not entirely above the drip pan, but also not enough room to wedge a bucket under it). And it pulled this stunt right before Memorial Day weekend. So I can sympathize. It's good to have a good mother-in-law nearby.
It really is. Although, by the time this is over, she might look into moving farther away. I was kind of hoping we'd have a similar situation with our water heater, instead of it being completely cooked. Neither situation is ideal, but it would have been nice to push that can further down the road until after all our mortgage stuff is settled and we have some time to recover from the closing costs. But I suppose that would have been delaying the inevitable. Maybe it's better just get it dealt with and done now. Or at least that's what I was thinking before the electric box blew up. Hopefully, in a week, or maybe even sooner, I can look back on this all and laugh. Well, maybe not laugh. But not cry, at least. Haha.
Isn't owning a home grand! My wife and I have dealt with our fair share of calamities as well. Thankfully we're still able to enjoy a hot shower, but that was very much needed after our basement flooded because it rained so much the water soaked into the earth and then came in through the 1960s era slatted windows we have in the basement. Yeah, we're having those filled in. Not cheap! Oh and we had to get a new fridge because our old one blew the water line and leaked into the basement where I had just shampooed the carpets to soak up water from the other, aforementioned leak! Thanks, Buddy Bell.
Oh man, flooding is the worst. Thankfully, this house hasn't had any issues with that since we moved in (really hope I didn't just jinx myself), but I've definitely had to deal with that in other places, and it is not pleasant. So you have my sympathies on that. Funny you mention the fridge too. We were actually hoping to replace our current fridge and sofa this year, as both are on their last legs, but now we need both to hold out a little longer, because that's definitely not in the budget anymore!
