Bret Saberhagen would be my answer. He'd been a Royal almost as long as I had paid attention and then suddenly he's a Met? Why are we trading with them anyway after they gave us Ed Hearn for David Cone?

Good question. That trade was traumatic for me too. Compared to seeing Willie Wilson or Gubicza or whoever in another uniform at the end of their careers, watching them give away Sabes when he was still in his prime was heartbreaking. If I'd known about all the injuries coming his way, it might have taken the edge off a little. Or maybe not. I was a kid and I loved Sabes, so I probably would have preferred to see him hurt for KC than dealing for somebody else. And even with the injuries, he still had some good seasons left in the tank.

Pissing on the supervisor makes you a legend in my eyes. Classic.

Fun read.

Any story you're still telling a quarter century later is usually a good one. Thanks for checking it out.

Nice job Patrick,

We could make an All Star team out of all players who were allowed to leave KC due to small market and lack of investment in free agency. It's been sad to watch over the years.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Thank you, Ed! KC will always be at a disadvantage as long as the current economic system remains in baseball, though that doesn't mean I'm ok with any billionaire owner crying poverty. It does seem like we might be entering into a new and better era in KC, however. Signing Witt was something they probably wouldn't have done in old days, which is insane because he's already one of the best players in the world- only 3 seasons into his career. And they've been both smart and active the past two offseasons, which is a refreshing change of pace. Take care of yourself. Baseball is almost back!

Me thinks Walmart still cares more about their carts than their employees!!

One player that shakes me every time is seeing Nomar Garciaparra with the Athletics. He actually looks good in the gold and green but it’s so weird to see at the same time. The Cubs and Dodgers don’t bother me as much. Maybe the blue is more forgiving. But Nomar as an A is very odd.

To be fair, almost everyone looks good in an Oakland uni. Sorry, I guess it's just an A's uniform now. That's gonna take some getting used to. But I get your point. I've always had a soft spot for the A's, but seeing my favorite Royal ever, Willie Wilson, wearing one of those uniforms was jarring.
