Great stuff, as usual, the 87 Donruss Diamond King Brett is awesome; however, the 82 Donruss is my favorite DK. It is a crime that Brett isn't pictured in powder blue! Dick got it right in 1990 when he put Bo Jackson in the powder blue. It's another great one.
BTW, in a Facebook group called Sports Card Nonsense, a guy posted pictures to the master set all autographed of Diamond Kings. "This took two of us over 23 years combined to complete! The 1982-1993 Diamond Kings set autographed by every player. It is over 330 cards! Just wanted to share this nonsense!" It is impressive.
Thanks for reading, Doug, and for the kind words. You know I'm a firm believer that you can never go wrong with powder blue. I can't even imagine the commitment it took to put together a set like that!
Idk where I missed this announcement, but looks like a cool doc! That’s my favorite type of tv to watch while I fold laundry, so I’ll get to it pretty soon (the kids have lots of dirty laundry, no Henley pun intended).
Posnanski is fantastic. I agree with you about Why We Love Baseball, it’s one of the best books that I’ve read, and of course The Baseball 100 is fantastic as well.
I’ve been seeing a lot about this documentary. I wasn’t planning on checking it out initially, but after reading so much about it, I think I’ll have to give it a shot!
It looks really interesting, and it comes at baseball from its own angle. If you're a diehard baseball fan, it gives you the chance to look at the game from a different perspective. And even if your interest in baseball is kind of meh, Perez's story is intriguing. I'm excited to see it.
Wonderful piece! There are so many great Perez pieces, and awesome Diamond King cards, that it's hard for me to name just one as a favorite. But the 1983 card featuring Dick Perez may be one of the first glimpses I had into a professional artist's studio and made me realize that being creative in some form or fashion could possibly be a career.
Thanks for the kind words, and I love the point you make. When I started writing about baseball, I worried it might be a bit too constricted in terms of subject. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy writing about the game itself and talking stats, and if that's what other people want to focus on, that's great, but I didn't want to be limited to just that. I think I've found a way to make it work, just as Perez did. Even though I've known his work since I collected cards as a kid, I'm just starting to learn about the man now,but he's become an inspiration for me.
Great piece Patrick! I'm looking forward to checking out the Diamond Kings documentary. Loved the cards you included in the article. When I returned to Kansas to visit family and friends, I stopped and caught a Central Missouri State vs Emporia State University game in Warrensburg MO. That evening George Brett was the keynote speaker and I got meet & greet and shake his hand, very cool for me. I followed him while I was at ESU and after college, great player. Thanks for sharing
